Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Enjoyed When I Was Younger

Hostess: That Artsy Reader Girl
So... this week's topic was originally supposed to be about books I wish I'd read when I was younger, but I'm giving it a twist to honor some of my favorite books from my childhood instead. I read these from mid-elementary school to about 6th grade, Harry Potter and The Red Pencil being the only exceptions. I read HP at the end of jr. high school (way too late), and The Red Pencil somewhere around the same time.

1. Walk Two Moons
9-year-old me cried for a solid half hour after reading this. I think it was the first major book I remember being distressed at, LOL.

2. The Winnie Years
So. Many. Memories!

3. Harry Potter
Obviously.

5. The Royal Diaries/Dear America
Even though I know these aren't 100% accurate, I really appreciate them for teaching history in a fascinating way.

6. Geronimo Stilton
Just for fun. Though I stopped reading once I realized how repetitive the books were getting, but I liked the older titles a lot!

7. One Crazy Summer
Super, super inspiring and eye-opening. I absolutely loved this series and was so sad when it ended.

8. The Tail of Emily Windsnap
Whimsical fantasy.

9. Clementine
Clementine was written so well, I could always relate to her emotions. This is definitely a series close to my heart!

10. The Beacon Street Girls
Such a cute middle grade series.

11. The Red Pencil
Another really inspiring story. I normally don't read books written in verse, but I made an exception for this one. Very, very well done.

12. Red Thread Sisters

13. The Thing About Luck

14. Amelia's Notebook
Sort of the older version of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid.

15. The Year of the Book

To me, some quiet titles were very powerful, so I'm super glad to have read all of them! I definitely have a greater appreciation for these stories now, because I feel like there's nothing quite like quiet MG.

What books did you enjoy when you were younger? Any from this list? Which books did you wish you had read when you were younger? Let me know below!

  1. 1. Funny, Walk Two Moons is one of the first books I can remember quitting because I legitimately could not understand what was going on enough to follow the story, despite being 10 or 11. The feeling that I should probably take another crack at it is at war with the very petty part of my childhood heart still holding a grudge.

    2. I love a good unique art design, so I am truly jealous that I did not grow up with the Amelia's Notebook series. I still like the idea of it, but I can just feel that these are books that make a bigger impact if found when you are around the character's age or younger. Glad you got to experience them.

    3. I did read Red Thread Sisters a few years ago. It was sweet; I can see why it would have been a favorite.

    1. 1. That's so interesting! I actually remember quitting this book the first time I read it as well, I just ended up picking it up a year or two later when I ran out of books at my home haha.

      2. I think you're absolutely right, Amelia's Notebook isn't really something I could get into now, but I can reread them fondly because I enjoyed them so much when I was younger.

Thanks for stopping by, I enjoyed reading your list as well!

  7. Geronimo Stilton! I never read those books. My daughter read a few, but her favorites were the spin-off series with Thea Stilton. She still has a TON of them.

    1. For some reason, I could never really get into the spinoff series (I think I was too old by then). But glad your daughter enjoys it!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. I was reading WALK TWO MOONS out loud to my daughter and both of us decided to DNF it. Both of us thought it was weird and neither one of us were enjoying it. I know lots of people who LOVE that book, but I just did not get it at all!

I agree with you, though - I would have liked quiet, powerful books as a kid. I also would have ADORED the HP books. I loved them as an adult, but I would have DEVOURED them as a child. Also, I think if they had been around when I was a kid, more of my peers would have become readers.

    Happy TTT!

    1. You know, Walk Two Moons was also too strange to me at first, but after re-reading it because I ran out of books at my house, I started to get into it more. But I understand where you're coming from for sure.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Yes, I felt really swept up in the book when I read it, so it was really a treat for my younger self. But it's the kind of book you can still appreciate no matter how old you are, so glad it's on your radar!

    1. It was so well written! I think it also had another level of depth that I don't necessarily see in modern diary/journal style middle grade books. Thanks for stopping by!
