Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School
by Jeff Kinney
Greg's mom is constantly trying to get Greg to live like she did in "the olden days", but Greg's just not cut out for that lifestyle. So when his town decides to go electronics-free for the weekend, Greg is surprised. He also gets to choose between a trip to an old farm or spending the week with his grandad. What will Greg choose, and will he last?
Before we get to the plot, I would like to discuss the overall story. The book was honestly the funniest, and it really stood out from all the others. He describes the little details so simply, it's hilarious. His pet pig is still around, and even starts walking! Well, I won't spoil too much of the beginning, since that's the hook. The main point is that Greg still hasn't lost his touch, and that's the most important part.
Okay, the back of the book mainly talked about Greg's town unplugging, so let's cover that part first. That day, Greg and Rowley set up a lemonade stand. The only problem is that none of them know how to make lemonade, so they don't stir in any sugar. Moreover, the water is from a hose (lol). Unhappy customers complain, and Greg predictably decides to stop selling lemonade and starts to sell something else. I'm not going to spoil what he sells either, because I cracked up when I saw, so I'll let you ponder over that. Overall, that scene was funny.
Okay, this next part is kind of a spoiler. Not really, but kind of. See, it is a bit obvious that this is going to happen, but I'll still giving a warning *just in case*.
So basically, the kids in Greg's class go on a Science Camp sort of field trip. Greg is all set on not going, but after some major trouble involving his dad and the car, he decides to risk it and go. All the while, kids speak of a ghost called Silas Scratch. However, the camp is still frightening. Stew is created using leftovers, and the pot - which hasn't been washed- is 30 years old. Besides the food condition, the bathroom in Greg's cabin gets clogged and each cabin has to do lots of chores everyday. I think the descriptions in this part of the story were great, and the humor in this section is always in the last sentence or to, as usual. Jeff Kinney does a great job of building suspense, and each day of camp is eventful. Also, I think this author brings something to relate to, from Science Camp to midnight raids.
Overall, I think this book deserves no less than 4.7 stars. Bravo, Jeff Kinney, and I can't wait for the next book! Here's the cover image (from another source) from the wimpy kid website.
Oh, if any of you guys want to read about my science camp experience, I have blogged about it a while back. Just click here, and thanks for reading.
